       Pieces of Me

Artist Statement

Visiting my dad at work, I noticed the pile of scrap wood in the corner by the saw.  I felt bad for those little scraps.  They weren't badly damaged-maybe a little warped or had a few bad spots-and I knew I needed to recycled those discarded gems.

I work with either acrylic paint or found paper I recycle from various places.  Acrylics dry fast which satisfies my impatient nature.  The paper I look for has to be visually compelling since I use it for linear pieces (I refer to them as "barcodes").  These pieces are simple to construct but need depth from the paper to interest me.

I'm inspired by geometric shapes which is where my current work is focused.  These shapes are simple but beautiful, especially when they are randomly arranged to make a distinctive pattern.  I'm also inspired by simplicity which manifests itself in my color palette.  I typically use only three to five colors-two that I think of prior to starting an artwork, and then up to three more that will complete my idea for the piece.
