Biography
I'm Rachel Troutman and I recycle scrap wood into new and
bold abstract paintings.
I graduated with a degree in Sport Management from Slippery Rock University but after a few years I knew I was in the wrong career. Visiting my dad at his work, I became inspired by the idea of giving the scrap wood tossed in the corner a second chance so I picked up my brushes and acrylic paint and started painting vertical lines. I loved it! I'd been painting on and off for years but on this day, I felt more connected to what I was producing than I had before. It was the spark I needed.
I love seeing my paintings take form. I love picking my colors, both complimentary and contrasting. And I love that I don't always know what I'll end up with when I'm done painting. Sometimes the process is better than the finished piece and I'm okay with that.
I work on small pieces of wood; nothing measures bigger than 12" in length and the reason for that is simple- I can't seem to find anything bigger! And on that note, let me say that my artwork is perfect for bookshelf spaces as well as hanging on the wall. ;) Of course I'm constantly trying new things but my heart will always be with making recycled wood bold.
My work is in private collections in several states as well as the Netherlands, Canada, Malaysia, & the UK.
